Description
Autoimmune pancreatitis (AIP),s first reported in 1995 (1), is now an established etiological agent of chronic pancreatitis (2). Reports from around the world have described cases of AIP (3-6) and reflect growing concern about its incidence. AIP can be defined as a chronic inflammation of the pancreas and is characterized serologically by increases of serum gamma globulin, IgG, and/or IgG4, and the presence of autoantibodies (7). Histopathological investigation of AIP typically reveals dense periductal lymphoplasmacytic inflammation, periductal and parenchymal fibrosis, and obliterative venulitis (8). Diagnosis is important, because the disease is characterized by a remarkable response to steroid therapy. Diagnostic criteria are evolving and combine histology, imaging, serology, other organ involvement, and response to steroid therapy (5) along with recently modified proposals (9,10).
